Grezhdan Castle in Debar is one of the largest castles in our country, even in the Balkans. The main place in this area, which is surrounded by 18 castles, is occupied by the city of Grezhdan, due to its size and complicated issue it holds in itself. With an area of 34ha and walls with a perimeter of 3000m, it ranks among the largest cities for late antiquity in Albania.

The archaeological research which started in the castle in the 2000s and onwards has brought to light important architectural elements unknown in the previous publications, which consist in the planimetric changes of the construction forms of the entrances, towers and the general line of fortification, thus creating a different view of the city plan, as well as other architectural elements, found in almost all military field castles such as Skampis, ‘Egnatia’, Ulpiana, ‘Lissus’ – Naissus etc., known until the period of Constantine, dated to the century. IV.

Grezhdani is a castle located 11 km southeast of the city of Peshkopi, between two streams, Grezhdani in the Northwest of the city of the same name, and Maqellara in the Southwest, which flow into the river Drini i Zi, built on a terrain hilly, 525-600 meters above sea level. It has a very important geostrategic position in the Black Drini basin, especially for the trade-military roads connecting the provinces of New Epirus (Adriatic), Dardania (Kosovo) and Macedonia II, which were realized by Via Egnatia and Lissus – Naissus.
